Donghuamen Night Market

Destination Introduction

Located at the northern entrance of Wangfujing Street, Donghuamen Night Market is the most famous snack street in Beijing. It enjoys an excellent reputation not only within the city but also among both domestic and international tourists. Nowadays, visiting Donghuamen Night Market has become a staple evening activity for tour groups coming to Beijing.

Speaking of the history of Donghuamen Night Market, it dates back to the early 1980s. At that time, Wangfujing had not yet been transformed into a pedestrian street—the roads were narrow and extremely crowded. The night market was set up at a bustling intersection, often with a chaotic mix of people and vehicles, and clouds of dust in the air. Despite the poor hygiene conditions, crowds continued to flock there, unable to resist the allure of Beijing’s delicious street food. Back then, people had mixed feelings about this snack street.

With the continuous redevelopment of Wangfujing Street, today’s Donghuamen Night Market has undergone fundamental changes. With a unified design and style, it is hailed as Beijing’s premier snack street.

This “premier” reputation is first reflected in its facilities. The ground is paved with specially selected stone materials, combining smooth and textured surfaces that are both easy to clean and effectively anti-slip. Each stall is equipped with a dedicated stainless steel food cart, complete with water and electricity connections as well as portable trash bins, fundamentally solving sanitation issues. Partitioning devices separate the snack street from the vehicle lanes, and floor lights are installed along the edges, serving a dual purpose of aesthetics and practicality.

Management of the vendors has also been strengthened. Vendors wear standardized red-and-white work uniforms that are clean and tidy, matching the main color scheme of the snack street. Environmentally friendly disposable tableware is required for uniform use, ensuring cleanliness and hygiene. There are also set price standards for the various local snacks.

Today, Donghuamen Night Market has been renamed the “Donghuamen Food Street Night Market.” In the evening, the aroma of diverse cuisines from north and south, the joyful crowds rubbing shoulders, and the rhythmic calls of vendors make it another highlight of Beijing’s nightlife.
