Gushan Chen Clan Ancestral Hall

The Gushan Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is a cultural heritage site protected at the Shaowu municipal level.

The Gushan Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is located southeast of Gushan Village, Yanshan Town, Shaowu City, Nanping, Fujian Province, at a bearing of 55 degrees, facing east and backed by the west. It is a brick-and-wood structure built in the year Dinghai of the Daoguang reign during the Qing Dynasty and has undergone multiple renovations. The main building is a single-courtyard structure. It has a rectangular floor plan, with a total width of 12 meters, a depth of 24.5 meters, and an area of 294 square meters. Along the central axis from front to back are the gate tower, stage, courtyard, and main hall. The entire structure is enclosed by a continuous stepped firewall. The gate tower is a four-story, seven-bay, three-door structure in the form of a single-row memorial archway. The lintel of the main gate features an intaglio brick carving in regular script reading “Chen Clan Ancestral Hall.” The gate also displays brick carvings of miscellaneous treasures, a deer holding a ganoderma, and a carp leaping over the dragon gate. There are two arched stone side gates beside the main gate, with the left one inscribed in regular script with “Enter Filial Piety” on its lintel, while the brick carving on the lintel of the right archway has been damaged. On both sides of the courtyard are corridors. The main hall has a flush gable roof, a post-and-lintel wooden frame, spans three bays with four pillars, and has a depth of six pillars with a front porch. There were originally wing rooms on both sides (now demolished), and the main hall was used to enshrine ancestral tablets. This ancestral hall boasts exquisite brick carvings and rich decorative patterns, making it of high research value. It provides important reference material for studying the inheritance and development of the Chen clan in Gushan Village.
