Jiangshan Scenic Area is located in Fengtou Village, Dongping Town, 35 kilometers from the county seat. Covering an area of 10 square kilometers, the highest point, Jinfengding Peak, stands at an elevation of 1206 meters. Legend has it that when the Tang Dynasty monk Xuanzang traveled here, he saw what resembled a “white elephant coiling around a lake,” so he built an ancient temple on this site, hence the mountain was called Zhangshan (Zhang meaning “monk” or “Xuanzang”). Over time, the character “Zhang” was mispronounced as “Jiang,” thus it became known as Jiangshan. It is one of the eight famous Buddhist mountains in Northern Fujian. The scenic area features overlapping peaks and uniquely beautiful mountains, with flat farmland of hundreds of acres nestled atop some summits. Ming Dynasty poet Guo Sihou once praised it in a poem: “Ridge upon ridge and peak upon peak rise into the azure sky; atop the summit lies a hidden lake of hundred acres wide.” Major attractions include Huisheng Temple, Jiangfu Grove, Cliffside Ladder, Longmi Rock, Seven Saints Pool, Monk’s Summit, Double Gate Cave, Jinfengding Peak, and White Ox Rock.
