Yanghou Bridge

Yanghou Bridge is a cultural relic protection unit of Fujian Province.

Yanghou Bridge is a provincial-level key cultural relic protection unit. Located in Yanghou Natural Village, Waizhun Village, Waizhun Township, it is a wooden arch covered bridge. The exact date of its initial construction is unknown, but the existing structure was built in October 1850 during the 30th year of the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty. The bridge’s arch spans 33 meters, with a width of 4.86 meters, and the rooftop of the bridge house stands 25.6 meters above the river surface. There are four rows of pillars on the bridge deck totaling 48 pillars, and the bridge has 11 bridge house rooms. Situated at a strategic point along an ancient post road, the bridge has undergone multiple repairs throughout history. However, due to years of exposure to wind, rain, and floods, the bridge foundation sank and the structure leaned. In May 2007, Wu Shoumu, a local villager, led the overall lifting and realignment project—the largest restoration effort in the bridge’s history—which took nine months to complete, thereby ensuring its preservation in excellent condition.

Waizhun Village: Waizhun Village is located in the central part of Zhenghe County and is an ancient settlement. It was called Donghu during the Tang Dynasty because the area around Xiachi in Waizhun, being low-lying and part of a small river valley alluvial basin, had poor drainage that turned into a swampy lake during floods—hence the name. During the reign of Emperor Shenzong of the Song Dynasty, the Wei family settled here, giving it the alternate name Weitun. Later, because the dialect pronunciation of “Wei” sounded the same as “Wai” (meaning “outside”), it came to be called Waizhun. It is now the site of the township government.
