Buddha Rock

The Fozishan Scenic Area covers an area of 137.3 square kilometers and comprises underground, surface, and three-dimensional spaces. It stretches east to Wanglou, west to Warock, north to Tongpen Mountain, and south to the Carp Stream in Zhenqian. The area is divided into the Shifeng Core Scenic Area (11.5 square kilometers), the Wanglou Secondary Scenic Area (3.8 square kilometers), the Qixingxi Secondary Scenic Area (6.5 square kilometers), and the Tongpen Mountain Scenic Area.

Within the Fozishan region, the slopes are well-preserved with lush trees and grass, and are home to many rare and precious tree species such as yew, fragrant princess trees, ancient golden trees, and kiwifruit. It is known as the “primeval forest” and “precious tree species base” of Zhenghe. The area also boasts rich cultural landscapes, including revolutionary sites worthy of reverence, caves where guerrillas once fought, and Buddhist holy sites. With cool temperatures and pleasant scenery all year round, along with distinctive local customs, the Ming Dynasty poet once praised it with the verse: “Riding my horse on the Chouling Pit and looking up, I clearly see a lion standing atop the ridge; the solitary peak stands tall against the blue sky, while the massive stone leans against the dawn’s pale light.”

The Fozishan Scenic Area features uniquely magical and stunning natural landscapes, and its striking and peculiar geological formations are considered one of a kind in East China. The towering and steep 178-meter-high Shifeng (Lion Peak) is majestic and lifelike, resembling a lion gazing at the sky. Surrounding Lion Peak is a vast expanse of pristine secondary forest, offering a beautiful natural environment, with the peak serving as an excellent viewing platform. The scenic area’s iconic geological formation — Fozhiyan (Buddha Rock) — is exquisitely crafted and remarkably lifelike. It earned its name due to its resemblance to a Buddhist disciple when viewed alongside Couple Rock. The area is surrounded by numerous striking peaks and lush vegetation. Together with Maitreya Rock, Eagle-Watching Rock, and Hanging Pillar Rock, it forms a natural landscape miniature. The steep and rugged Bijia Mountain (Pen Rack Mountain) features uniquely shaped peaks. With a cliff face over 230 meters high, it gets its name from its resemblance to a pen rack. Here, the mountain peaks rise sharply, and the cliffs are dramatic, creating a unique landform. Bijia Mountain is covered with dense forests and ancient trees, and the view becomes even more spectacular when seen from different angles. In addition to these three main peaks, there are 43 other notable attractions including famous peaks, rocks, and caves.
