Tomb of Cai Lie

The Tomb of Cai Lie is located at the southern foot of Yun dong Yan in Caiban Village, Lantian Town, Longwen District. The tomb faces southeast and is situated to the northwest. About ten meters in front of the tomb stands the Heqiu Pavilion. Inside the pavilion is a stone stele inscribed with the Heqiu Inscription, composed by Lin Da, which reads: “A thousand-ren-high crane peak, the winding Long River, amidst them lies a mound, and the man buried here is as pure as jade.”

Cai Lie (1479–1558), styled Wenji, was a native of Longxi (present-day Houxiji Community, Caiban Village, Lantian Town, Longwen District, Zhangzhou). In his youth, he was a student at a local school, studied under Cai Qing from Jinjiang, and later learned from Chen Maolie from Putian.

During the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty, he lived in seclusion at Baiyun Cave on Mount Heming (Yun dong Yan in Zhangzhou) where he gave lectures. At that time, scholars and learners from all over came to seek his teachings one after another. Scholars referred to him as “Master of Crane Peak.” His works include several volumes such as The Definitive Edition of the Classic of Filial Piety, The Doctrine of Investigation of Things and Extension of Knowledge from The Great Learning, Records of the Dao of the South, Zhu Xi’s Late Years’ Final Teachings, Correct Views of Various Scholars, Essence of Sayings by Great Confucians, and Reading Record.
