Xiaoxian Museum covers an area of 3,000 square meters, with a building area of 1,170 square meters. Its exhibits are divided into four major sections: Ancient Civilization, Han Dynasty Splendor, Tang and Song Dynastic Legacy, and Modern Civilization. The museum has three exhibition halls: “Ancient and Modern Relics,” “Xiaoxian Han Dynasty Stone Carving Art Gallery,” and “Xiaoxian Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition Hall.”

Ancient and Modern Relics Exhibition Hall

The Ancient and Modern Relics Exhibition at Xiaoxian Museum primarily displays artifacts from ancient civilizations, notably stone tools, jade artifacts, and bone or horn implements unearthed from ten Neolithic sites in Xiaoxian, showcasing the region’s early civilization. The Han Dynasty Splendor section features Han Dynasty relics that trace the historical roots of Xiaoxian’s calligraphy and painting traditions. The “Tang and Song Dynastic Legacy” section mainly exhibits various ceramics unearthed from the Bai Tu Kiln in Xiaoxian during the Tang and Song periods (at its peak, the kiln site had up to 72 workshops), reflecting the development and craftsmanship level of the local ceramic industry during those dynasties.

Han Dynasty Stone Carving Art Gallery

The Han Dynasty stone carvings in Xiaoxian Han Dynasty Stone Carving Art Gallery can be broadly divided into three categories: auspicious birds and mythical beasts, mythological legends, and scenes of daily life. Some carvings also blend these three themes together. The patterns on the Han Dynasty stone carvings include auspicious symbols for warding off evil, such as two dragons passing through a wall, crossed rings, and door knockers with ring designs. Other carvings depict real-life scenes, such as gatekeeper figures and architectural structures, offering an authentic glimpse into the politics, economy, culture, and beliefs of the Han Dynasty.

Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition Hall

The Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition Hall at Xiaoxian Museum mainly showcases works and literary collections by notable local painters and calligraphers from Xiaoxian, including Xiao Longshi, Liu Kaiqu, and Yan Zizhao.

Among the cultural relics collected at Xiaoxian Museum, the majority consists of stone and jade artifacts from the Neolithic period, pottery from the Han Dynasty, Han Dynasty stone carvings, ceramics from the Song Dynasty’s Xiaoyao Kiln, and calligraphy and paintings by local authors from modern times. Among these, the Han Dynasty stone carvings, Song Dynasty Xiaoyao Kiln ceramics, and modern artworks by local authors are especially distinctive of the region. The museum’s exhibitions provide visitors with a comprehensive and intuitive understanding of Xiaoxian’s long history and rich cultural heritage.
