Monument to Chastity and Filial Piety

Located 18 kilometers northwest of Lixin County, 800 meters west of Sunji Town, on the north side of the Sunji–Yemaliu Road. It was erected by imperial decree of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty to honor Madam Chen, mother of Sun Lanfang, for her unwavering chastity, filial piety, and exemplary parenting. The entire structure is carved from bluestone and is divided vertically into three sections, consisting of five parts in total, standing 3.26 meters high, 1.08 meters wide, and 0.39 meters thick, covering an area of 14.50 square meters. The upper section of the stone archway features an intricately carved openwork relief of “Two Dragons Playing with a Pearl” at the top, with bas-reliefs of flowers, figures, and sun-moon motifs on the sides. The central area bears the solemnly inscribed imperial seal characters “Imperial Edict,” flanked by carvings of “Two Dragons Playing with a Pearl” that echo the top design. The middle section centers on the “Monument to Chastity and Filial Piety” stele, surrounded by “Two Dragons Playing with a Pearl” reliefs. Vertical couplets flank the stele, adorned with floral patterns at the top and bottom, with the main text omitted here. The lower section forms the base of the “Monument to Chastity and Filial Piety.” It is now a county-level key cultural relics protection unit.

Sunji Town: Sunji Town is located 17 kilometers northwest of Lixin County’s urban center. It borders two towns and one township—Zhangcun, Xipanlou, and Jiwangchang—and faces Wangshi Town across the Xi Fei River. Established in 1992 through the merger of Sunji Township and Liuying Township under the former Sunji District, the town covers a total area of 65 square kilometers, with 58,000 mu of arable land. By the end of 2005, it had jurisdiction over 14 village committees and 129 natural villages, with a total population of 40,726, including 978 non-agricultural residents.
