Red Gate Temple Ruins

The Red Gate Temple Ruins are a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Anhui Province.

The Red Gate Temple Ruins are roughly rectangular in shape, higher in the middle and lower around the edges, with the highest point about 2 meters above ground level, covering an area of 154,600 square meters. The site gets its name from a temple that once stood here. Legend has it that the original temple had main halls to the north and south, over a hundred rooms, and housed hundreds of monks. The time of its destruction remains unknown. It was discovered during a cultural relics survey in 1985, where well-preserved cultural layers were found. Artifacts collected from the surface include: a red pottery duck-billed tripod leg, fragments of red pottery jars with basket-patterned and appliqué patterns, red pottery li tripod feet, gray pottery dou stem, rope-patterned pottery fragments, basket-patterned pottery fragments, and plain-surfaced pottery fragments. Based on these finds, the site is identified as a settlement from the Neolithic Age to the Han Dynasty. With its large area, early period, and good preservation, the ruins hold significant archaeological and academic research value.

Protection zone: 230 meters east and west from the center point of the ruins, and 200 meters north and south.

Construction control zone: 30 meters beyond the boundaries of the protection zone.

Address: 3 kilometers west of Zhangcun Town, Lixin County, 500 meters north of Litai Highway, and 50 meters north of Houyang Village, Houyang Administrative Village

Zhangcun Town: Located in the northwest of Lixin County, Zhangcun Town borders Miaolaoji Town of Taihe County to the west, adjoins Gaogong Town and Dianji Township of Guoyang County to the north, and is bounded by the Xi Fei River. Provincial highways Fuyang–Jieshou–Fengtai (S202 and S308) run through the area, making transportation very convenient. It is one of the three major established towns in Lixin County. The town governs 30 village committees, covering a total area of 108 square kilometers. The town government is located in Zhangcunpu, which is 27 kilometers from the county seat of Lixin.
