Taiwan Guild Hall
The Taiwan Guild Hall is a cultural tourism attraction.
The “Taiwan Guild Hall,” historically known as the “All-Taiwan Guild Hall,” is located on Datong Street in Dongcheng District, Beijing, approximately 500 meters south of Tiananmen Square’s Zhengyang Gate. It was built around 1890.
Taiwan Guild Hall
After Zheng Chenggong reclaimed Taiwan, he introduced the imperial examination system to the island. Starting from the 24th year of the Kangxi reign (1685), Taiwanese scholars began traveling to Beijing to take the metropolitan examinations. To facilitate their travel and foster connections, in 1893, Shi Shijie, a Taiwanese scholar-official, oversaw the establishment of the Taiwan Guild Hall, which moved to No. 114 Datong Street in 1896. During the Republican era, the guild hall was leased to merchants. After 1949, it became residential housing. In 1993, the Taiwan Guild Hall was restored as a commemorative site. That same year, renovations were carried out, and on July 18, 1994, an unveiling ceremony was held, reopening the hall as a venue for Taiwanese expatriates in Beijing to gather and network. A centennial commemoration event was held in 1996.
Due to the original hall’s limited space, inconvenient transportation, and outdated facilities, it could no longer meet the growing needs of cross-strait economic and cultural exchanges. With the comprehensive redevelopment of the Qianmen area, the renovation and expansion project of the Taiwan Guild Hall officially commenced on June 24, 2009. The renovated guild hall incorporated the neighboring Yunjian Guild Hall and Fude Chanlin as part of the new complex, increasing the total floor area from the original 400 square meters to over 3,800 square meters. On May 7, 2010, the grand reopening ceremony of the Taiwan Guild Hall and the signing ceremony for Taiwanese businesses entering the Chongwen Taiwan Business District were held. Attendees included a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee, the Honorary Chairman of the China– organization and his wife Lian Fang, Vice Chairperson of the National Committee of the CPPCC and Chairperson of the – Central Committee Lin Wenying, and Wang Yi, Director of the Taiwan Work Office of the CPC Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, who unveiled the plaque for the Taiwan Guild Hall. Speeches were given by Liang Guoyang, President of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, the Honorary Chairman of the China– organization, and Guo Jinlong, Deputy Secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee and Mayor of Beijing.
