Xicao Shi Street
Beijing Charm: Storytelling and opera
Age: Over 100 years
Past: In the late Qing Dynasty, the area around Zhushikou gathered numerous theatrical troupes, gradually forming what became known as the Costume Street. Initially, it only sold costumes for Peking Opera, Hui Opera, and other traditional dramas. Later, more prop shops and ethnic clothing stores joined in, making it the only specialized street in Beijing for theatrical costumes.
Present: Located southeast of the Zhushikou intersection, Xicao Shi Street is famous for its costume shops. Its fame stems from historical circumstances. Although it is no longer as bustling as it once was—due to municipal relocation, well-known old shops such as Jiuchun and Kou tou Liu have moved to Tianqiao—Beijing Opera Costume Factory and some costume shops remain. Visitors can still faintly sense the lingering melodies of opera, while regulars recall the former lively heyday.
Where to find it: 30 meters south and 40 meters east from the intersection of Qianmen Street and Zhushikou Street, on the south side of the road
Highlights: Beijing Yiyuan Theatre, Beijing Sanyou Theatrical Costume Store
