Chrysanthemum River Park
The Chrysanthemum River originates from Zhonghai Lake in the Western Imperial Garden of the Forbidden City, flows past Tiananmen Square, and then runs eastward along the northern side of the southern wall of the Forbidden City. The boundaries of Chrysanthemum River Park are as follows: west to the Working People's Cultural Palace, east to Nanheyuan Street, north to Feilongqiao Hutong, Nanyuanzi Hutong, and others, and south to the northern red wall of East Chang’an Avenue. The park stretches approximately 510 meters in length, with a total planned area of 3.8 hectares. The planned green space and water surface cover an area of 2.02 hectares. The total investment for the park is 390 million yuan, and construction began in March 2002. The river channel restoration project of Chrysanthemum River Park was carried out by excavating at the original river location and connecting it to the Golden Water River outside Tiananmen. The restored Chrysanthemum River is about 500 meters long, with a water surface width of 9 meters, and four pedestrian bridges have been erected. Its greening project preserved over 60 large trees along the riverbank, and newly planted more than 500 trees, 2,000 shrubs, over 16,000 flowers and herbaceous plants, as well as a large amount of aquatic vegetation. The greening efforts were integrated with the restoration of historic sites, creating scenic spots such as “Red Wall Reminiscence,” “Chrysanthemum by Spring,” and “Sky Light and Cloud Shadows.” In addition, based on a thorough exploration of historical culture, appropriate sculptural pieces were set up to enhance the atmosphere and serve as the finishing touch.
