Jixi Kuixing Pavilion

Jixi Kuixing Pavilion is a cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province.

Kuixing Pavilion is located in Shijia Village, Shangzhuang Town. It was built by Qing Dynasty resident Shi Chengmo to revive literary culture and was completed in the 16th year of the Qianlong reign (1751). It was renovated in 1984, and the entire structure remains well-preserved. Covering an area of 47 square meters, the building has a square floor plan with a hip-and-gable roof, supported by flying rafters that carry the eaves. Four square stone pillars stand at the corners of the base, supporting the beam frame, with corridors on all sides. In the center, a wooden lattice door faces west, with a plaque hanging above inscribed with “Mountain Stream Scenery.” The north and south golden pillars feature couplets: “A ten-li stream winds where waters embrace green sashes and ribbons; A village facing north is ringed by peaks like phoenix towers and dragon pavilions.” Legend has it that the Shi family, to express their ideology of “restoring the Ming and opposing the Qing,” infused deep symbolism into the pavilion’s design. The upper part of the building is larger than the lower, symbolizing the Ming above and the Qing below, suggesting the strength of the former and the weakness of the latter. The eaves extend 17 feet from the ground, representing the 17 emperors of the Ming Dynasty; the wing corners reach 19 feet above the ground, with the sum of the four corners being 76, plus 200 for the 50 rafters used on each side, totaling exactly 276—the number of years the Ming Dynasty ruled—demonstrating ingenious design and profound symbolism. In 1986, it was announced as a county-level key cultural relics protection unit. In 2016, it was listed as part of the second batch of municipal-level cultural relics protection units. In 2019, it was designated as part of the eighth batch of provincial-level cultural relics protection units by the People's Government of Anhui Province.
