Jixi Museum

Jixi Museum is a cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province.

Jixi Museum is a comprehensive local history and culture museum that integrates academic, educational, cultural, and recreational elements, fully showcasing the natural beauty and historical heritage of Jixi. The museum is located in the heart of the old city district, on the site of the former county government office and also the ruins of the old county yamen. With a construction area of 10,003 square meters and a land area of 9,520 square meters, it features an exhibition space of approximately 4,200 square meters.

Designed under the direction of Li Xinggang, Chief Architect of the China Architecture Design & Research Group, Jixi Museum's design is based on an understanding of Jixi’s geographical environment, the origin of its name, and the integration of Huizhou-style architecture and settlement characteristics with the surrounding mountain and water formations. The entire structure is covered by a continuous roof, with undulating contours and textures that echo the nearby landscape. The elegant gray tiles and white walls, the well-arranged courtyards and skywells, and the crystal-clear glass curtain walls combine to perfectly merge the profound culture of Huizhou with modern architecture. Within this thoroughly contemporary urban museum, visitors can still experience connections to traditional spaces—courtyards, lanes, skywells, corridors, rockeries, and water edges—while seeing familiar elements such as gray tiles, white walls, bluestone, round gates, tile windows, and decorative drip tiles reinterpreted in a modern way. This allows Jixi Museum to serve as a modern structure suited to international contexts while subtly preserving and communicating tradition and culture. Centered around Jixi’s long and rich historical legacy, and set against the backdrop of its picturesque natural scenery, the museum offers comprehensive facilities, a thoughtful layout, and distinct local characteristics. It integrates tourism, cultural display, collection of treasures, as well as research and exchange of cultural relics, serving as a key destination for citizens and travelers to deeply understand and vividly experience the history and culture of Jixi.
