The Wang Family Residence

The Wang Family Residence is a cultural heritage site protected at the Anhui provincial level.

A provincial-level cultural heritage site, located in Wang Village, Yingzhou Township, with a total area of 326 square meters. The structure features a unique layout with a garden-like ambiance. The main gate is adorned with a brick-carved door hood. Passing through a stone-paved alley leads to a round gate, which opens into a courtyard with a screen wall decorated with book-scroll-style brick carvings. A small gate leads into a water hall that also serves as a study. The main building faces south and is three bays wide and seven bays deep, covering a construction area of 238 square meters. It has paired halls on the upper and lower floors, interconnected on the second level, with a flush gable roof and enclosed fire walls. The wooden lattice windows, diagonal braces, spandrels, and camel humps within the building are all adorned with exquisitely crafted carvings. It stands as one of the representative works of late Qing Huizhou-style architecture. In May 1998, it was designated as a provincial-level cultural heritage site under approval document Wan Zheng [1998] No. 16.

The residence boasts a uniquely arranged layout with a garden style. The first entrance features a brick-carved door hood, leading through a stone-paved lane to a round gate, which opens into a courtyard with a screen wall. A small gate leads into a water hall that also functions as a study. The main building faces south, is three bays wide and seven bays deep, with a construction area of 238 square meters. It has paired upper and lower halls, interconnected on the second floor, a flush gable roof, and fire walls. The residence is intricately carved and features a distinctive style.

Nanguan is located in the southern part of Jixi, 7 kilometers from the county town, facing Tangjin Mountain and backed by Dengyuan River. Tangjin Mountain houses the tombs of the founding ancestor of the Dengyuan Wang family from the Southern Dynasties, Wang Shuji (also known as Shujǔ), and the parents of Wang Hua, the Duke of Yue from the Tang Dynasty. The Jixi County Annals · Historical Sites from the Jiaqing era of the Qing Dynasty recorded: “Tangjin Mountain is as expansive as the county town. Within the mountain lies a water cave with cool, sweet spring water. Drinking this water not only cools and relieves heat but can also cure dysentery—truly miraculous. Moreover, there is a mountain ridge stretching across, naturally forming the ‘Lock and Key of Dengyuan,’ making it a necessary passageway of the ancient Huizhou-Hangzhou Road and also one of the ancient scenic spots of Jixi.”

Though small in size, Nanguan is renowned for its exceptional landscape, thus living up to the ancient saying — “a place where exceptional spirit breeds exceptional talent” — becoming the ancestral home of the Wang family.
