Xiajian Kiln Site

The Xiajian Kiln Site is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Anhui Province.

A provincial-level cultural heritage site located south of Xiajian Village, Huayang Town, Jixi County. Five kiln sites have been discovered: Gusaotang, Duimianyao, Lishuxia, Chenjiawan, and Huangjintan, forming an ancient cluster of kilns. The Xiajian Kiln was established during the Five Dynasties period, covering an area of 8,000 square meters. All were built vertically on earthen mounds and belong to the dragon kiln system. The cultural strata vary from 1 to 2 meters in depth. It produced a wide variety of items, mainly porcelain, along with a small number of pottery pieces. The glaze types include celadon and black porcelain, both applied evenly with a glossy, finely crackled finish. The body is dark gray and dense. The shapes include bowls, plates, cups, bowls, teapots, oil pots, and vases. The decorative patterns are mostly plain, though some bowl and plate rims are carved with sunflower designs, and most teapot bodies are made in melon-ribbed shapes. The teapots feature belt-pattern imprints on their handles, showing harmonious and graceful forms. The pottery includes celadon-glazed pottery, red pottery, and gray pottery, with shapes such as bowls, cups, basins, and jars. Most of the kiln's firing methods involved supporting items with kiln pillars, while some bowls and plates were fired in saggars. Bowls were supported by 5 to 9 long spacer pegs, leaving clear marks. Since the discovery of the Xiajian Kiln, ten other kiln sites have been found in the county, including Shiumuyuan, Xiangkou, Huli, Meishutan, and Kongling. The products from these kilns are largely similar to those of the Xiajian Kiln, demonstrating the thriving ceramics industry of the time. In 2005, during the development of the western area of Jixi County by the local government, the three kiln sites at Huangjintan, Lishuxia, and Chenjiawan were completely destroyed and no longer exist. Currently, only Duimianyao and Gusaotang remain, well preserved. In 1989, it was designated as a provincial-level key cultural heritage site.

Protected Area: 10 meters to the north of the kiln site, 20 meters to the west, and 30 meters in a southeast arc.

Huayang Town: A town with a history of two thousand years, now the seat of Jixi County Government, serving as the political, economic, and cultural center of the county. The town administers 5 community residents' committees and 4 village committees, covering an area of 83 square kilometers with a population of 43,000. The arable land area is 490 hectares, including 337 hectares of paddy fields.
