Xiaohe Straight Street

The Xiaohe Straight Street Historical and Cultural Block is located in the northern part of Hangzhou, at the confluence of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, Xiaohe River, and Yuhangtang River. It borders Xiaohe River to the east, Hemu Road to the west, Xiaohe Road to the south, and Changzhengqiao Road to the north.

The Xiaohe Straight Street Historical and Cultural Block retains, to a large extent, the overall architectural style and spatial characteristics of the residences and shipping facilities distributed along the canal and Xiaohe River, centered around Xiaohe Straight Street. It is of considerable scale and can be considered one of the more completely preserved traditional historical and cultural blocks in Hangzhou. The block authentically reflects the living environment of the lower-class people along the canal during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican period, preserving a significant number of historic buildings. Its architectural features, street scenery, and remnants of canal shipping still maintain a distinctive charm. Since the Song Dynasty, this area has been an important section along the canal. Following the prosperity of the Republican era, it has left behind a diverse array of historical relics and a rich, multifaceted cultural heritage.

The Xiaohe Straight Street Historical and Cultural Block is one of the key historical areas that collectively reflect the urban civilian residential culture, productive labor culture, and canal shipping culture of the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican period. It is a historical and cultural block that primarily maintains its traditional residential and commercial functions while continuing Hangzhou’s local traditional cultural elements and showcasing canal shipping culture. It integrates commercial-residential, residential, and leisure functions within a single historical district.

Along the ancient banks of the Grand Canal, some historic streets and alleys still remain. Xiaohe Straight Street is a classic example of a quaint, well-preserved riverside residence embodying the charm of a traditional Jiangnan water town.
