The former residence of John Leighton Stuart is located at No. 1-3, Jidutang Lane, Tianshui Bridge, Hangzhou, occupying a two-story building covering an area of over 200 square meters. It is said that this building was constructed by Stuart’s father during his missionary work in Hangzhou. At the age of two, John Leighton Stuart moved into this residence.

In 1985, the former residence was designated as a cultural relic protection site in Hangzhou. In 2001, the Hangzhou Gardens and Cultural Relics Bureau purchased the property rights from the relevant organization and carried out restoration work to preserve its original appearance. Fang Youqiang, deputy director of the Hangzhou Celebrity Memorial Museum, explained that staff consulted nearly all available photographic and documentary materials about the residence to restore its historical living conditions as accurately as possible. Currently, only four rooms on the first floor are open to the public, arranged as a living room, study, bedroom, and dining room to depict four aspects of daily life. These rooms display photographs and textual materials illustrating Stuart’s early life in Hangzhou, his founding of Yenching University in Beijing, and images from his time serving as the U.S. Ambassador to China.

John Leighton Stuart was born in 1876 into an American missionary family in Hangzhou. He founded Yenching University in 1919 and served as its president. In 1946, he was appointed U.S. Ambassador to China. He left China in 1949.

In June 1876, John Leighton Stuart was born in Hangzhou to American missionary parents. He began missionary work in China in 1904 and participated in the establishment of Hangchow YMCA School (later known as Zhijiang University).
