The ancient Tongji Bridge

The ancient Tongji Bridge is located in the northern part of Xiacheng District, northeast of Shiqiao Subdistrict. Built in the 23rd year of the Jiajing reign during the Ming Dynasty (1545), its foundation consists of rocks from the foothills of Banshan Mountain, and the bridge was constructed directly from stone—hence the name “Stone Bridge.” Originally called the ancient Tongji Bridge, it is an arched bridge measuring 13.1 meters in length, 2.3 meters in width, and 3.7 meters in height. A bridge stele is inscribed with a poem describing the scenery, which reads: “A single arrow of spring water opens a bright mirror; peach blossoms line both banks embracing the rainbow. It irrigates our fields through ditches and channels, and aids travelers reaching their destinations.”

Shiqiao Subdistrict in Xiacheng District was named after this bridge. Its specific location is in Taohuayang of Shiqiao Community, south of Beijingyuan, north of Ganchang Village on Shixiang Road, and east of Dongxin Road. It is now a cultural relic protection unit of Hangzhou City.

Protected area: approximately 5 meters extending outward from the bridge structure, covering a total area of 283 square meters.

Construction control zone: extends about 20 meters outward to the east (to the extended boundary line of the plot), about 15 meters outward to the south (to the plot boundary), about 30 meters outward to the west (to the extended boundary line of the plot), and about 20 meters outward to the north (to the plot boundary), covering a total area of 2,816 square meters.

Shiqiao Community: Shiqiao Community is located at the northeastern edge of urban Hangzhou, extending from the southern foot of the former Banshan Mountain. Historically, it housed several temples and nunneries among the forests of Banshan, Huanghe, and Gaoting mountains, forming a corner of the Southeast Buddhist region. Today, the area spans Routes 104 and 320, with the Xuancheng–Hangzhou Railway running through it. The Shangtang River bends northward then eastward here. Backed by Beijingyuan, the community holds a strategically vital position with well-developed transportation. Since ancient times, it has been a key water and land hub in the northeast of Hangzhou. It also gained fame in the city due to the ancient Tongji Bridge, built in the 23rd year of the Jiajing reign (1545) and spanning Taohuayang within its boundaries.
