Wulin Square

Wulin Square is located to the north of West Lake, in front of the Provincial Exhibition Hall in the city center. It is named after the Wulinmen area where it is situated. The surrounding area is filled with newly built high-rise buildings, including the Telecom Building, Hangzhou Tower, Hangzhou Theater, Hangzhou International Building, and Hangzhou Department Store. As a result, it has become a bustling yet garden-style central square in Hangzhou.

A fountain was built in the square in 1985. The pool has a diameter of 36 meters and is shaped like a five-petal plum blossom, with a sculpture of three dancing girls in the center holding red parasols. Each of the five petals features a sculpture of a girl playing a musical instrument—some cradling a pipa, others gently blowing a lusheng, leaning on a flute, or plucking a konghou. The group sculpture is vividly crafted, evoking a joyous atmosphere of song and dance. On festive nights, as music plays from the eight surrounding light poles, melodious traditional tunes fill the air. The main fountain then shoots water up to 33 meters high, taking the shapes of orchids, metasequoias, and morning glories, while smaller jets around the pool create arcs, highlighting 75 colorful underwater lights that produce a dazzling, fantastical spectacle. This spot has become one of the beautiful attractions in Hangzhou.
