Ming Residence
The Ming Residence is a cultural heritage site protected by Hangzhou Municipality.
The Ming Residence is located at No. 277 Xinhua Road and collectively refers to two Ming Dynasty buildings: the Mao Residence and the Chen Residence. The Mao Residence currently retains two courtyards: the first being the sedan hall with three bays spanning 7.5 meters in width, and the second being the main hall with five bays spanning 19.5 meters in width. It began to be called the Ming Residence after being purchased by the Mao family in 1884. During a 1984 cultural relics survey, a square brick dated to the 25th year of the Wanli era (1597) of the Ming Dynasty was discovered. Judging from its architectural style, it is categorized as a late Ming residential building. The Chen Residence was originally situated at No. 15 Xiawan Lane in Gongshu District and was relocated here for preservation when the straightening project of the Jiangzhang Bridge section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal took place. Both residences have undergone restoration, and their layouts have slightly changed from the originals. They are now used as commercial spaces by the Silk City and are protected as cultural heritage sites by Hangzhou Municipality.
