Beijing Keyuan Garden
Keyuan Garden is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
Keyuan Garden is located in Mao’er Hutong, outside Di’anmen in Dongcheng District, Beijing. It was the residential garden of Wen Yu, a grand secretary in the late Qing Dynasty (1644–1911), and is one of the best-preserved private gardens in Beijing.
The garden spans nearly 100 meters from north to south and about 70 meters from east to west. Its layout is highly refined: the western section consists of a courtyard house; the central section features a row of back-facing rooms at the front, with rockeries and a pond in the front courtyard, surrounded by trees and flowers. A central passageway hall connects to the rear courtyard, which is enclosed by corridors and planted with various plants. The eastern section mainly includes side rooms and a main hall, with rockeries in the courtyard. The architectural layout and style are quite flexible, and the central and eastern garden sections are connected via covered walkways to form a unified space.
Keyuan Garden is one of the better-preserved examples of private gardens in northern China. After its construction, several notable figures and foreign ambassadors to China resided and worked here, giving it considerable artistic and historical value. (National Cultural Heritage Administration)
