Yangping Guild Hall Theater
The Yangping Guild Hall Theater is a protected cultural heritage site of Beijing.
The Yangping Guild Hall Theater is located in the northwest of Chongwen District, near Xiaotong outside Qianmen. The guild hall was first built during the Ming Dynasty and underwent several renovations over time. The theater was later constructed and rebuilt during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty. It is a majestic structure, featuring a 12-rafter double-eave hip-and-gable roof with front and rear double corridors.
The interior of the theater is adorned with intricately carved beams and painted rafters, exuding opulence. The audience stands consist of two levels, with the second floor directly facing the stage. This upper level features a front-veranda-style official box under a rolled shed roof, while both sides also have audience areas that can accommodate tables and benches. The guardrails of the stands are fitted with carved balustrades and ornamental pillars, and staircases are provided at all four corners for access. The main floor space below forms a square pit, furnished with square tables and long benches for general audience seating. The stage itself is nearly square in shape, protruding into the performance area in a front-veranda design, supported by a pair of stage pillars in the front and featuring a surrounding corridor. The stage has three levels, with trapdoors above and below, enabling the setup of mechanical stage settings. Murals are painted on the walls on both sides of the theater, and there are shrine niches used for worshipping deities and ancestors. The back wall facing the stage is inlaid with four stone tablets, recording the historical establishment, evolution, and renovation of the guild hall. Due to severe weathering and human damage, most of the inscriptions are illegible, with only “Yangping” and some partial characters still recognizable.
Originally, several large plaques hung inside the theater, but now only two wooden plaques with gold characters on a black background remain. One of them bears the inscription “Xingshi Duo” (Awakening Bell), written by Wang Duo, a renowned calligrapher from the late Ming and early Qing periods.
The Yangping Guild Hall Theater is one of the larger, more exquisitely constructed, and comparatively well-preserved examples of Qing Dynasty-style civilian guild hall theaters in Beijing. It holds scientific value for the study of guild hall layouts and the history of theatrical development. In 1984, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural heritage site.
