The most common types of bridges in the Jiangnan region come in three forms: arched bridges, flat bridges, and zigzag bridges. The way to tell them apart is simple: arched bridges have circular arches that allow boats to pass through easily; flat bridges feature square openings with straight decks; while zigzag bridges span the river in a straight line. Anjing Bridge is an arched bridge, Yongning Bridge is a flat bridge, and Wan’an Bridge is a zigzag bridge.

Standing on Anjing Bridge, you can take in three different types of bridges in one view — a rare sight in other ancient towns. This bridge is located next to “Ming-Qing Food Street.”

Anjing Bridge stands over Xutang River and serves as a transportation hub in town. Originally known as Zhongtang Bridge, it was preceded by the old Anjing Bridge. Built during the Ming Dynasty, it once spanned two townships of Xietang at the time. Xutang River served as the boundary between the two, and since this bridge connected the two areas, it was named Anjing Bridge (meaning “Peaceful Boundary Bridge”).

Crossing Anjing Bridge to Lujia Bridge, the east-west waterway beneath it is Shaogang River.

Xitang Town: Xitang, formerly known as Xietang, was established as a market town in the Ming Dynasty, bordering Yong’an and Qianshan townships. Initially named Xietang, it later became known as Xitang. Legend has it that during the Spring and Autumn Period, Wu Zixu stationed troops here and dug the Wuzitang Canal to improve irrigation, diverting water from Xushan Mountain directly into the area — hence the name Xutang (Xu’s Canal). Xitang Town is located in the northern part of Jiashan County, at the junction of Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang provinces, enjoying a strategic location known as the “Corner of Wu and Yue.” It lies 90 km east of Shanghai, 110 km west of Hangzhou, 85 km north of Suzhou, and 9 km south of Jiashan County seat. The town center is situated at 120°53′ east longitude and 30°56′ north latitude. With access to both land and water routes... More detailed information about Xitang Town++
