China Wine Culture Museum

The China Wine Culture Museum was reconstructed on the foundation of the original Huangjiu (Yellow Wine) Exhibition Hall, enriched with wine culture artifacts collected by several generations of Mr. Liu Ximing. From one facet of wine culture, it offers a comprehensive exploration of Chinese wine culture through hundreds of physical exhibits. Its distinctive feature lies in blending knowledge, fun, and academic insight. In tracing the origins, it reveals the clear background and profound connotations of Chinese wine culture, touching upon a wide range of social science and natural science disciplines such as folklore, history, economics, literature, art, and medicine. It is a microcosm of traditional Chinese culture.

The ancient town of Xitang has historically been a wine town. “Savoring fine wine and composing fine poetry” have long been two cherished pursuits of scholars and literati. In the early Ming Dynasty, the great poet Gao Qingqiu stopped his boat to inquire about local taverns while passing through Xitang. During the Qing Dynasty, the famed plum blossom-flavored Sanbai wine from Xitang could be smelled for miles. In the early Republican period, Liu Yazi was often seen getting drunk in the town’s taverns. Xitang’s wine culture can be said to have developed alongside the ancient town and grown in reputation together with it.

Xitang originally had a Huangjiu Exhibition Hall, filled with the fragrant aroma of yellow wine. Ancient wine vessels were displayed in glass cabinets, showcasing a century of Chinese wine culture, along with various kinds of knowledge about Huangjiu, allowing visitors to closely experience the intoxicating fragrance of the brew. Mr. Liu Ximing, a winemaking scion from the western region, was drawn to the wine town of Xitang. He exhibited the wine culture artifacts collected by his family over several generations here, opening the “China Wine Culture Museum” on the foundation of the original Huangjiu Exhibition Hall.

Xitang Town: Xitang, formerly known as Xietang. Established as a market town during the Ming Dynasty, it spanned the Yong’an and Qianshan townships and was initially called Xietang before later being named Xitang. Legend has it that during the Spring and Autumn Period, Wu Zixu stationed troops in the area and dug the Wuzitang canal to develop water conservancy, channeling water from Xushan Mountain directly into the region—hence it was also called Xutang. Xitang Town is located in the northern part of Jiashan County, at the junction of three provinces and cities –  – enjoying a superior geographical location and is often referred to as the “Corner of Wu and Yue.” It is 90 km east of Shanghai, 110 km west of Hangzhou, 85 km north of Suzhou, and 9 km south of Jiashan County. The central urban location has coordinates at 120°53′ east longitude and 30°56′ north latitude. The town has both waterway and land transportation... More detailed information about Xitang Town++
