Xitang Zhang Zheng Root Carving Art Museum
The root carving museum located in Jijia Lane is a privately owned art gallery. Though it may look unremarkable from the outside, it houses over a hundred root carving works by the renowned artist Zhang Zheng, truly a place where hidden treasures abound.
Zhang Zheng is from Hangzhou, originally from Shucheng, Anhui. In 1999, he moved to Xitang, a feng shui treasure land ideal for relaxation and inspiration, where he founded the root carving art museum.
Zhang Zheng’s works emphasize a style where “seven parts are natural, three parts are crafted,” showcasing a bold and magnanimous aesthetic that seems almost supernaturally skillful. The root carving museum has two floors: the first floor displays mostly large-scale animal-shaped root carvings, while those on the second floor are relatively smaller. Regardless of size, all the artworks are incredibly lifelike, leaving visitors in awe of the artist’s exceptional craftsmanship and extraordinary skill.
Master Zhang has been recognized in the World Who’s Who for his outstanding skills and fearless spirit, earning the title “Son of the East.” Many of the works exhibited in the museum, such as “Panda Panpan,” “South Sea’s Marvelous Coral,” “The Oriental Lion,” and “Peacock Spreading Its Tail,” have won major awards both nationally and internationally. Additionally, Zhang Zheng entered the Guinness World Records for creating the largest number of large-scale root carvings (500 pieces, averaging 250 kg each).

Xitang Town: Xitang, anciently known as Xietang. Established as a market town during the Ming Dynasty, it was originally named Xietang after straddling Yong’an and Qianshan counties. Legend has it that during the Spring and Autumn period, Wu Zixu stationed troops here and dug the Wu Family Pond to improve water management, channeling water from Xushan Mountain directly into the area, hence it was also called Xutang. Xitang Town is located in the northern part of Jiashan County, at the junction of three provinces and one municipality — an area of strategic importance, often referred to as the “Corner of Wu and Yue.” It lies 90 km east of Shanghai, 110 km west of Hangzhou, 85 km north of Suzhou, and 9 km south of Jiashan County’s urban center. The town’s central coordinates are 120°53′ east longitude and 30°56′ north latitude. With access to both land and water... More detailed information about Xitang Town++
