Xuanwumen Catholic Church
Xuanwumen Catholic Church is located inside Xuanwumen and is Beijing’s first church. It was built during the Ming Dynasty’s Wanli era when Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci was permitted to preach Christianity in Beijing.
In the seventh year of the Shunzhi reign in the Qing Dynasty (1650), the German Johann Adam Schall von Bell, then serving as head of the Imperial Board of Astronomy, rebuilt the church on its original site. Due to its location in the southern part of Beijing, it is commonly known as the South Church and served as the activity center for Jesuits in Beijing during the Qing Dynasty. The church is currently in use by the Chinese Catholic Church.
