Xitang Shuiyanglou

Shuiyanglou is located in Shaogang Port of Xitang Ancient Town. It is a two-story building in the Ming and Qing architectural style, with exquisitely preserved ancient wooden doors, windows, and furniture. A few steps down from the garden leads to a small river, and from the second-floor balcony, you can see Wufu Bridge to the west. The study is small, and both the balcony and garden are no more than four or five square meters, but they are charming in their compactness.

Xitang Town: Xitang, formerly known as Xietang, was established as a market town during the Ming Dynasty, bordering Yong’an and Qianshan townships. Initially called Xietang, it later became known as Xitang. Legend has it that during the Spring and Autumn Period, Wu Zixu stationed troops here and dug the Wuzitang (Wu’s Pond) to develop water conservancy, channeling water from Xushan Mountain directly into the area, hence it is also referred to as Xutang. Xitang Town is located in the northern part of Jiashan County, at the junction of three provinces and municipalities — Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang — enjoying a superior geographical position, often called the “Corner of Wu and Yue.” It lies 90 km east of Shanghai, 110 km west of Hangzhou, 85 km north of Suzhou, and 9 km south of Jiashan County seat.
