Ginkgo Trees at the Lu Tomb

There are two ginkgo trees at the Lu Tomb, one male and one female. They were originally part of the burial site of Imperial Censor Lu Bang. One was planted to the northeast of Lu Bang’s grandfather’s tomb, and the other to the southwest near the water.

Planted during the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty, they are now over 600 years old. The ancient trunks are twisted, and the foliage is lush. The site is now located in Yujia Lane under Nanpeng in Xitang. The tomb is no longer traceable, leaving only the stone statues of officials and horses around it, along with these two ancient ginkgo trees. Lu Bang was a native of Xitang, served as a provincial governor, and was known for his integrity, vast knowledge, and had once been the teacher of Zhao Wenhua, an imperial censor of the Ming Dynasty. Legend has it that Lu Bang’s residence was built using leftover bricks from the construction of Jiashan City Wall, which were overseen by Zhao Wenhua.

Legend has it that during the Spring and Autumn Period, Wu Zixu stationed troops here and dug the Wuzi Pond to improve water management, channeling water from Xushan Mountain directly into the region, hence it was also called Xutang. Xitang Town is located in the northern part of Jiashan County, at the junction of Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang provinces, enjoying a prime geographic location and often referred to as the “Corner of Wu and Yue.” It lies 90 km east of Shanghai, 110 km west of Hangzhou, 85 km north of Suzhou, and 9 km south of Jiashan County seat. The town center is geographically positioned at 120°53′ east longitude and 30°56′ north latitude. With both land and water routes... More details about Xitang Town++
