Dawang Site
The Dawang Site is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Zhejiang Province.
The Dawang Site is located at Dawangwei in the northeast of Zhanxing Village, Yaozhuang Town. It is a site dating from the Majiabang Culture of the Neolithic Age to the Maqiao Culture of the Shang and Zhou periods.
The site has a rectangular layout, covering an area of approximately 30,000 square meters. Two rescue archaeological excavations were carried out in 1985 and 1991. The deposits span a long period of time, with the cultural layer being over 1 meter thick. Artifacts belonging to the Majiabang Culture include waist-rimmed cauldrons, ox-nose style loop handles, and stone axes; those from the Songze Culture include cord-patterned pottery urns, dou (food vessel) bases, and tile-shaped ding (tripod) feet; artifacts from the Liangzhu Culture include double-spouted ewers, T-shaped and fish-fin shaped ding feet, segmented stone adzes, stone chisels, and willow-leaf shaped stone arrowheads; and items from the Maqiao Culture include concave-bottomed jars, duck-shaped zun (wine vessels), as well as pottery shards with cord, stripe, thundercloud, and large checkered patterns, stone knives, and bronze arrowheads.
The Dawang Site is one of the confirmed sites in Zhejiang Province that exhibits a complete prehistoric cultural sequence from Majiabang to Songze, Liangzhu, and Maqiao cultures. With rich content and a long continuity, it provides important material for studying the development and evolution of prehistoric cultures in the Taihu Lake basin.
In December 1989, it was announced as part of the third batch of Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Heritage Protection Units.
