The Zhoushan City Archives was established in April 1959, with a total storage area of 1,995 square meters. It houses 276 fonds, comprising 100,015 volumes and 3,034 items of archives, as well as 21,431 volumes of reference materials. These include: Qing Dynasty archives, Republican-era archives, revolutionary historical archives, and post-establishment-of-the-PRC archives. These archives reflect the developmental history of politics, economy, culture, science and research, and various sectors, fronts, social strata, and figures within the Zhoushan region, serving as a microcosm of the city’s economic and social development. The Municipal Archives Bureau (Archives) operates under a unified “bureau-and-archives” management system and has been awarded the title of Zhejiang Provincial First-Class Comprehensive Archives. In recent years, the Municipal Archives has closely aligned with the central tasks of the Party and government, actively developed and utilized the archival information resources in its collection, and employed diverse forms and channels to fully leverage the authentic historical record function of the archives. It has carried out a rich variety of public educational activities for society, achieving a unique educational effect that combines the historical essence of the archives with the spirit of the new era. This reflects the Archives’ new “four-in-one” functions as a preservation base, patriotic education base, archival utilization center, and current documents utilization center.

The Patriotic Education Base of the Zhoushan City Archives was established in December 2004. Key patriotic education exhibits are concentrated in one exhibition room within the storage area, covering an area of approximately 16 square meters. The exhibition content is divided into three major aspects. The first highlights various physical archives such as contracts, contract tails, merit plaques, historical photographs of the Opium War, and inscriptions from central leaders during their inspections of the city, dating from the Xianfeng era of the Qing Dynasty and the Republican period. The second aspect uses a combination of text and images on display panels to comprehensively showcase the old and new appearances of Zhoushan’s development and the outstanding achievements made in the construction of the three civilizations of socialism. The exhibition panels are divided into six sections: Zhoushan History (Liberation of Zhoushan, Zhoushan and the Opium War, ancient fossils discovered in Zhoushan), Leadership Care, Zhoushan Fisheries, Transportation and Ports, Island Scenery, and the New Qian Dao City. The third aspect systematically presents the development and changes of the Zhoushan City Archives, introduces the contents of the archived materials, and includes ten thematic sections. Additionally, the exhibition room displays several publicly issued archival publications and books from the Archives, including Selected Historical Materials on Zhoushan, Selected Historical Materials on the Opium War in Zhoushan, Ten Years of Zhoushan, All Previous Zhoushan Party Congresses, All Previous Zhoushan People’s Congresses, and All Previous Zhoushan CPPCC Sessions. It also features over ten types of archival materials and books such as Selected Compilation of Zhoushan Revolutionary Martyrs and Their Deeds, Zhoushan Figures at Home and Abroad, Portraits of Zhoushan Party Members, Annotated Edition of Changlei Classics, Kangxi Dinghai County Annals, Annotated Edition of Ancient Zhoushan Chronicles from the Song, Yuan, and Ming Dynasties, and A Catalogue of Ancient and Modern Local Documents of Zhoushan.

In addition, the Municipal Archives has also launched an online archival exhibition hall and established an online information service channel for patriotic education and publicity. Exhibition sections include: the “30th Anniversary of Reform and Opening-Up Commemorative” photo exhibition, the “Zhoushan Opium War Commemorative Exhibition Hall,” the “20th Anniversary of the Archives Law Promulgation Commemorative” photo exhibition, and the “Glorious Zhoushan Large-Scale Commemorative Event” photo exhibition, totaling sixty sections.

The Patriotic Education Base of the Zhoushan City Archives aims to utilize the archival resources in its collection, using historical events and examples from daily life to carry out education on patriotism, revolutionary traditions, and knowledge about the nation, province, and city across the municipality. It serves as one of the bases for providing ideological and political education to the city’s Party members, cadres, and youth.
