Zhoushan Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery
Zhoushan Martyrs' Cemetery is located at the foot of Longfeng Mountain in Changguo Subdistrict, Dinghai District, Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province.
Zhoushan Martyrs' Cemetery was first built in 1959, completed and opened to the public in 1964, and underwent expansion and renovation of its memorial structures from 2001 to 2006. Covering an area of 3.6 hectares, the cemetery is nestled against hills and forests, rising in terraces from southeast to northwest. Major memorial structures include: the cemetery archway, the Revolutionary Martyrs' Exhibition Hall, the Hall of Loyalty, the Octagonal Pavilion, the Memorial Plaza, commemorative reliefs, the martyrs' burial area, the tomb and monument of Lin Maocheng – a first-class combat hero of the East China region, the tomb and monument of the martyrs of the 1385 Naval Unit who perished, the tomb of General Ma Long – former commander of the East China Sea Fleet, the statue of Yang Jingjuan – an anti-Japanese heroine of the East China Sea, and the Martyrs' Memorial Tower. Among these, the Revolutionary Martyrs' Exhibition Hall displays a list of 1,393 revolutionary martyrs from various periods, their life stories, historical artifacts, photos, personal belongings, details of major battles, and introductions to notable martyrs. Zhoushan Martyrs' Cemetery is an important revolutionary memorial site in Zhoushan City, where 153 revolutionary martyrs rest in peace.
The Haishan Zenghui Archway is situated at the southernmost main entrance of Zhoushan Martyrs' Cemetery. The horizontal plaque bears the inscription “Haishan Zenghui” (literally “The Sea and Mountains Shine Brighter”), handwritten by Guo Moruo. The archway features four pillars and three gates, with four vivid stone lions on either side of the main gate, giving it an ancient and solemn appearance.
The Martyrs' Memorial Tower is the tallest and largest revolutionary martyrs' memorial tower in Zhoushan. Standing 26 meters high, the square-shaped tower is constructed of marble, with upturned eaves at the top covered in dark green glazed tiles and a red five-pointed star at the tip. The front of the tower is inscribed with the words of Zhu De, former Vice Chairman of the CPC Central Committee and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress: “Eternal glory to the revolutionary heroes who sacrificed their lives for the cause of people’s liberation!” The surrounding platform is paved with stone slabs and enclosed by a one-meter-high railing. An activity area and a corridor have been built in the northeast corner of the tower for visitors to rest after paying their respects. At the lower front of the tower, steps and a platform form a descending pathway.
In January 1988, Zhoushan Martyrs' Cemetery was designated as a Key Martyrs’ Memorial Building Protection Unit by the Zhejiang Provincial Government. In November 1994, it was named a Patriotic Education Base by the Zhoushan Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government. In February 1995, it was further recognized as a Provincial Patriotic Education Base by the Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government.
