South Peak Mountain
Located 1.4 kilometers south of Xianju County’s urban area and standing 96 meters above sea level, South Peak Mountain is a popular destination for excursions in the suburbs. The mountaintop is open and spacious, with an ancient pagoda from the Northern Song Dynasty standing tall. It overlooks the Yong’an River. In the old days, the river was dotted with small boats, and the interplay of water and mountain scenery created a delightful natural scene, known as “Fishing Boats at South Peak.”
Beside the pagoda lies the Ancient Ling Shrine, built to commemorate Chen Xiang, a county magistrate of the Song Dynasty, who “promoted education by establishing schools and teaching students.” To the south of the shrine is Peach Blossom Cave, which offers views of the river and mountain scenery. The mountain features over 10 halls, pavilions, terraces, and towers built during the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, with their ruins still in existence. About half a kilometer southeast of the mountain lies Tower Hill, also known as Anzhou Hill, where a seven-story ancient pagoda from the Ming Dynasty stands atop. One kilometer north of South Peak Mountain is Fuying Hill, which has an ancient pagoda from the Song Dynasty on its summit. The three pagodas stand proudly to the east and south of the county town, adding a touch of antiquity to the mountainous cityscape. Fuying Hill is covered with lush trees, while a stream flows continuously at its base. In the past, there was a large bell on the hill that rang at dawn, its sound carrying several miles, hence known as the “Morning Bell of the Eastern Ridge.”
