Zhongyangkeng Cliff Inscriptions (Provincial-level Cultural Relics Protection Unit)

Era: Spring and Autumn–Warring States Periods

Announcement Date: March 16, 2005

The Zhongyangkeng Cliff Inscriptions are situated in Wufen Tou and Li Chang, two natural villages of Zhongyangkeng Village, Guangdu Township, Xianju County. They are carved on the stone walls beside an ancient path near the village. To date, three inscriptions have been found: Inscription No. 1 is on the left side of the stone wall at the “entrance to the vegetable garden” in the west of Wufen Tou Village, featuring four carved characters that are fairly well preserved; Inscription No. 2 is on the left side of the stone wall at the “Back Hill” in the west of Wufen Tou Village, with six carved characters that are somewhat blurred due to severe weathering but still faintly discernible; Inscription No. 3 is on the right side of the stone wall along the ancient path in the east of Li Chang Natural Village, displaying two carved characters whose strokes are slightly blurred from weathering.

Authenticated by experts as pictographic characters of the ancient Yue people, the discovery of these cliff inscriptions represents a significant find in the archaeology of Yue script and an important breakthrough in the history of ancient Chinese writing. It holds great value for the study of the history and culture of the ancient Yue people.
