Tongjiao Temple
Tongjiao Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.
Tongjiao Temple is located at No. 19, Zhenxian Hutong, Beixiaojie, Dongzhimennei, covering an area of over 2,500 square meters. Originally built during the Ming Dynasty by an imperial eunuch, it was converted into a nunnery during the Qing Dynasty and renamed "Tongjiao Chanlin." In 1942, nuns Kaihui and Shengyu from Fujian took charge of the temple and expanded it, renaming it "Tongjiao Temple." After renovation, the temple features a three-bay mountain gate, with the Mahavira Hall located at the western end of the complex. The north and south buildings consist of two floors totaling 40 rooms, with the Qingtai Lodge consisting of three rooms behind the north building. The northern wing room includes, at its westernmost end, the Sangharama Hall, while the middle five rooms serve as the dining hall, known as the Five Contemplations Hall. The southern side hall has seven rooms, with the middle three functioning as the Buddha-Chanting Hall, the westernmost room as the Patriarchs Hall, and the eastern three rooms as living quarters. In 1943, Shengyu established the Bhikkhuni Eight Precepts Academy, using Tongjiao Temple as a place to collect offerings and establish a library. In early 1981, the temple underwent renovations.
