Former Residence of Gu Yinhou

The former residence of Gu Yinhou is located at No. 296, Wutian Street, Wutian Street Village, Wutian Subdistrict, Ouhai District. It was built in 1906. The residence faces south and overlooks the Wenrui Pond River. It consists of a gate tower, two side wings, and a main house, forming a small three-sided courtyard.

The gate tower is a single-bay brick structure with brick piers on both sides. The base features interlocking geometric brick patterns, with two long grooves on the upper part, a granite lintel, and four sets of bracket sets. The camel humps support square brackets, which project outward to carry the brick eaves. The surrounding wall flares outward in a “V” shape. Each of the two side wings has two rooms. Inside the residence, a bluestone plaque remains, with the three characters “Gu Tongchun” carved in relief in regular script, each character approximately 40 cm in size. “Gu Tongchun” was a well-known soy sauce workshop in the late Qing Dynasty. At that time, the Gu family brewed soy sauce and yellow wine, and relying on this pond river, their business continued to grow. They built this large house during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty.

The central pathway of the courtyard is paved with flagstones. The main house is five bays wide and six bays deep, with a rolled shed-style corridor in front and a through-tenon wooden frame. The second floor features lattice railings, and the roof is of the flush-gable style. The second floor has an arcade corridor with finely carved bracket sets and spandrels.
