Tomb of Huang Huai

The Tomb of Huang Huai is a cultural relic protection unit of Ouhai District.

The Tomb of Huang Huai is located at the northern foot of Dalu Mountain in Naliu Village, Chashan Subdistrict, Ouhai District. The tomb mound is built in a folding-chair shape using strip stones. In front stand two spirit way steles, flanked by several pairs of stone statues such as stone figures. The tomb site covers an area of about 500 square meters.

Huang Huai (1367–1449), styled Zongyu and also known as Jie’an, was a native of Yongjia (now Lucheng District) during the early Ming Dynasty. In the 30th year of the Hongwu era (1397), he passed the imperial examination and was appointed as a Hanlin Academician Drafting Edicts. At the beginning of Emperor Chengzu’s reign, he was selected as a Grand Secretary. When the emperor was away on military campaigns, he was ordered to assist the crown prince in governing the state. Known for his foresight, Emperor Chengzu praised him as being “like standing atop a high ridge, able to see all in the distance.” Upon the ascension of Emperor Renzong (1425), he was promoted to Junior Guardian, Minister of Revenue, and concurrently Grand Secretary of the Wuying Hall. When Emperor Xuanzong ascended the throne (1426), he personally led a campaign against Zhu Gaoxu and left Huang Huai in charge, assisting the two princes in governing the state. The following September, he earnestly requested retirement. He was summoned to the capital several times and received great honors. He was posthumously given the title Wenjian (Literary Simplicity). He authored the Collected Works of Jie’an and Reflections on Faults. His biography is included in the History of Ming.
