Zhushikou Church is a Christian church established in Beijing by the Methodist Episcopal Church (Methodist Church), and it is one of the few Christian churches in Beijing still in active use.

Zhushikou Church is located at No. 129 Qianmen Street, Dongcheng District, at the intersection of Guang’an Avenue and Qianmen Street, two bustling thoroughfares. The church was first built in 1904 and was the first of eight churches constructed by the Methodist Church in southern Beijing after 1900. It was completed in 1923. The church features a simple Gothic-style exterior.

From its inception, Zhushikou Church has been led by Chinese pastors. Starting in 1926, the church began practicing self-support but continued to receive subsidies from the American church through the North China Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church (Methodist Church).

Zhushikou Church

In 1958, during the unification of Protestant church services in Beijing, 4 out of over 60 churches were retained, and Zhushikou Church was one of them, referred to as the South Church. Believers from other denominations in southern Beijing were merged into this church.

In 1966, with the start of the Cultural Revolution, activities at Zhushikou Church were halted, and it reopened after 1980.

In 1921, the church underwent an expansion, forming the basic three-story structure seen today. Due to the lack of fire prevention and earthquake-resistant facilities at the time, safety concerns arose during the construction of Guang’an Avenue. City and district authorities paid close attention to preserving the church, and during the construction of “Guangda” Road, the road was specially rerouted around the church.

The exterior and interior decor of the church were also very plain and originally quite unremarkable. However, during the widening of Liangguang Road in 2000, dedicated extension roads were built on its north and south sides to avoid affecting the church, leaving Zhushikou Church in its original location and turning it into a small roundabout on Guang’an Avenue. Later, a million-yuan renovation was carried out to make the church notably prominent and unique.

In June 2002, the Beijing Municipal Finance Bureau allocated over 1 million yuan for a third major reinforcement and maintenance project at Zhushikou Church. After the restoration, closed-circuit television was installed, allowing congregants to watch worship services conducted by the pastor in the main hall on the second floor.
