Beijing Tap Water Museum

The Beijing Tap Water Museum is affiliated with the Beijing Waterworks Group. It is the first museum in Beijing to be funded entirely by corporate resources and has now become an "Beijing Youth Science Education Base." The site of the museum was originally home to Beijing’s first water treatment plant — the Dongzhimen Water Plant. The main building of the museum is the original steam engine room (commissioned in 1910, standing 12 meters high and covering an area of over 600 square meters, it housed two horizontal double-acting piston reciprocating steam engines that powered two water pumps with a total capacity of 441.6 kilowatts, delivering 18,700 cubic meters of water per day. Disinfected water from the plant was pumped from this machinery room into a water tower and then flowed into the distribution network by gravity.). In addition to the steam engine room, visitors can also see other historic buildings and facilities from the Dongzhimen Water Plant that date back nearly a hundred years. The newly renovated steam engine room retains a rare example of European architectural style today. The exhibits on display — including physical objects, photographs, models, dioramas, and explanatory texts — offer a clear insight into the development of Beijing’s tap water system over the past 90-plus years.
