Baimajian Longchi Scenic Area
Baimajian Longchi Scenic Area is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.
Baimajian Longchi Scenic Area is located in the western part of Fengqiao Subdistrict, Suzhou High-Tech District, and is an important component of the western Suzhou tourism area. It serves as an original ecological “green lung” for the entire high-tech district. With high standards, ambitious planning, and harmonious integration, the area is divided into six functional zones (four natural scenic areas and two public leisure zones). It is planned as a natural ecological leisure resort within the urban area of Suzhou, highlighting the natural ecology and cultural features of the ecological park.
Ancient Charm: The area’s historical and cultural heritage can be traced back 2,500 years. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, it was a horse-breeding ground for the King of Wu and the place where King Goujian of Yue endured hardship to seek revenge. It served as the temporary palace for Emperor Kangxi during his second southern tour and Emperor Qianlong during his six southern tours in the Qing Dynasty, and is now a modern tourist and leisure destination. Historical sites such as the Horse Drinking Pool and Xieyue Ridge still remain. The Longchi Scenic Area boasts numerous cultural attractions. The path leading to Longchi is an ancient imperial road, flanked by the ruins of Emperor Qianlong’s palaces from the Qing Dynasty. There are many ancient cliff carvings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, including inscriptions by the Ming Dynasty literary figure Zhao Yiguang such as “Thousand-Foot Snow” and “Longevity Stone,” the Qing Dynasty Qianlong Emperor’s imperial stele “Mirror Reflecting Cloud Roots,” the Valley Spring Study of Xu Fang, a renowned painter and calligrapher from the late Ming and early Qing periods, as well as attractions like the Cloud Valley Waterfall, Horse-Seeking Pavilion, Waterside Boardwalk, Heavenly Crafted Stone Rhyme, Ten-Li Wooden Plank Walk, Xin Yuan Tower, and Heart-Cleansing Spring. These blend culture with nature, and history with modernity. In 2002, biologists discovered living fossils known as peach blossom jellyfish in Longchi, which have appeared continuously in recent years, underscoring the natural value of the pool.
Beautiful Waters: Mountains and rivers converge at Longchi, which is the source of the stream. The shimmering lake offers ever-changing scenery—whether it’s the sound of orioles amid willows or the murmuring of streams. Water is the essence of the Longchi Scenic Area. The upstream section offers leisure activities such as bamboo rafting and water bikes, while the downstream section features activities like water walking balls and fishing.
Spiritual Mountains: Three mountains embrace Baimajian, and the spiritual energy of heaven and earth gathers at Longchi. Though not particularly high, the mountains offer a serene and ethereal atmosphere. Formed over 100 million years ago by intense tectonic movements, the ridges and valleys are home to ancient, strikingly shaped rocks. Massive stones such as the Golden Toad Worshiping Longevity, Horse Head Rock, and Buddha’s Palm are vividly lifelike. From the heights, one can also see inscriptions left by literati and poets throughout the ages, each praising the splendid scenery.
Secluded Forests: Verdant forests thrive among green hills and clear waters, serving as an urban “green lung” that cleanses the soul. The park is home to a wide variety of tree species, making it a natural classroom for students and visitors to learn about local flora. The forest features 13 youth activity projects, including large suspension bridges, castles, and swing sets, as well as recreational activities such as drift exploration, space walking, and large grass skiing fields. Scattered throughout the scenic area are service facilities such as the “Cloud Valley Villa” and “Longchi Cottage” farm-style restaurants, Jazz Island Coffee, Suzhou-style snacks, and large leisure barbecues.
In 2005, it was awarded titles such as “Advanced Collective in the Tourism Industry” by the Suzhou Municipal People’s Government, “Best Tourism Investment Award in Suzhou” and “Standardized Service Qualified Unit in Suzhou Tourism Industry” by the Suzhou Tourism Bureau. On December 4, 2006, it passed the AAAA-level scenic area inspection with high scores, becoming the 20th national AAAA-level scenic area in Suzhou. It has also successively received honors such as “Advanced Unit in Building a Healthy City in Suzhou for 2006,” “Advanced Collective in the Suzhou Tourism System for 2007 and 2008,” “Jiangsu Environmental Education Base,” “Suzhou Tourism Integrity Unit,” “Suzhou’s Best Rural Tourism Attraction,” and “Member Unit of the Suzhou Tourism Association.”
The ancient charm, beautiful waters, spiritual mountains, and secluded forests of Longchi Scenic Area resemble a heavenly paradise. Dubbed an “urban oasis” by visitors, it is the perfect destination for tourism, leisure, and hosting various cultural activities for corporate and group events.
