Fengqiao Scenic Area

Fengqiao Scenic Area is located by the Chengxi River, 3.5 kilometers west of Suzhou city. It is a provincial-level scenic spot primarily featuring the “Five Antiquities”: the ancient Hanshan Temple, the historic Jiangfeng Bridge, the ancient Tie Ling Pass, the ancient town of Fengqiao, and the old Grand Canal. Notable attractions include Hanshan Temple (for details, please refer to the separate listing), Fengqiao, Jiangcun Bridge, Tie Ling Pass, and Jiangfeng Isle. Fengqiao and Jiangcun Bridge span the ancient Grand Canal, boasting simple and elegant designs. From atop the bridges, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the landscapes outside Gusu, presenting a magnificent scene. Tie Ling Pass, also known as the Fengqiao Watchtower, was first built in the 36th year of the Jiajing reign during the Ming Dynasty (1557 AD). During the Ming era, Japanese pirates frequently harassed the regions south of the Yangtze River. To defend Suzhou and strengthen security between Fengqiao and Changmen, the local military and civilians constructed Tie Ling Pass, which now stands as the only remaining Ming-era military relic in Suzhou related to the resistance against pirates. Jiangfeng Isle weaves together the ancient town, watchtowers, passenger boats, nearby trees, frost, crowing birds, and temple bells, embodying a water-friendly concept and recreating the scenery of “Mooring by Maple Bridge at Night.” It naturally blends traditional art with modern tourism, forming a vivid and colorful portrayal of Gusu’s customs.
