Unlike Guanqian Street, Shilu features a typical modern commercial district layout. Squares, shops, restaurants, and bars blend together like various delicious ingredients to form a colorful and diverse pizza. This magnificent area

was recently revitalized in early 2004 and is now referred to by locals as the “New Shilu.”

The old Shilu area was originally the outer port of Suzhou, serving as a distribution hub connecting Suzhou with external commerce. Since ancient times, it has been bustling with merchants. During the late Qing Dynasty, the Westernization Movement figure Sheng Xuanhuai opened this road here. It was named “Shilu” (Stone Road) because its surface was paved with stones.

Today’s Shilu is breathtakingly beautiful. The Huaiyang River meanders through like a jade ribbon inlaid among granite-paved streets, with small splashes of cascading water creating a unique scene where cars drive along the riverbank and people stroll above the water. A sleek, over 100-foot-long red pedestrian bridge with no supporting pillars arches gracefully over both sides of the Huaiyang River, embodying the charm of Impressionist art alongside the soft curves of Jiangnan-style architecture. At the North Shilu Square lies Suzhou’s largest dry fountain. To the rhythm of music, water jets shoot up and down, splashing in unpredictable patterns. The light boxes embedded in the ground shine brilliantly like a starry sky. The interplay of illuminated pathways and the fountain’s rhythm creates a modern symphony. For shoppers, you’ve come to the right place — large shopping malls such as International Mall and Asia Mall stay open until after 10 PM, allowing you to wander and linger to your heart’s content. Along the beverage street of Xinfeng Lane, numerous high-end cafes and bars stand in rows. If you’re feeling a bit tired, this is the perfect haven to relax and recharge.
