Suzhou Heshan Taoist Temple

- The temple is situated at the foot of the mountain two kilometers west of Hanshan Temple outside Gusu City, just one kilometer from Lion Mountain and Suzhou Amusement Land. The entire mountain covers an area of 296,000 square meters and has an elevation of 63.8 meters. With beautiful scenery and ever-changing views in all four seasons, in the warm spring of March, new leaves sprout and plum blossoms bloom; in the hot summer, you can rest in the shade of the trees and enjoy a refreshing atmosphere; in the crisp autumn air, osmanthus flowers fill the mountain with fragrance; in the winter, when the sky hangs clear, the green bamboo remains evergreen.

- Originally known as Hefu Mountain or Choumian Mountain, it was later named after He Qiu and He Dian of the Liang Dynasty, who resigned from office to live in seclusion here. The mountain contains relics from He Qiu and He Dian of the Southern Liang Dynasty; there is also the Zhangwang Temple, built in memory of Zhang Shicheng, the leader of the uprising at the end of the Yuan Dynasty, who during his time in Suzhou reformed corruption, developed water conservancy, reduced taxes, nurtured talent, and benefited the people. Other features include existing cliff inscriptions, memorial halls, and more, forming a cultural corridor of historical and humanistic significance. As the ancients said: “Mountains are firm and expansive, rivers are flowing and gentle. When firmness and gentleness interact, the earth’s energy is established.” Heshan is not large or high, but stands independently, surrounded by rivers. Energy flows beneath the earth, moving according to the terrain and gathering where the landform allows. The bones of the hills and ridges, the branches of the strong hills, guide the flow of energy. Suddenly rising like Songshan, it stands as a guardian over the region. To the left is Tiger Hill, to the right is Lion Mountain, supporting it together. The thriving earth energy gives birth to a dragon’s lair here, forming the Heshan feng shui treasure land.

- The layout of the temple features a main axis with the Mountain Gate (Lingguan Hall), Zhangwang Hall, and Jade Emperor Hall. Auxiliary halls include the Cihang Hall (Guanyin Hall), the God of Wealth Hall, side rooms, office areas, and other facilities. The Heshan Taoist Temple follows the regulations of Taoist temples and is arranged according to a natural, pristine feng shui layout, achieving refinement, ingenuity, spirituality, elegance, and divine presence. It has become a blessed place for rest, a flourishing site for wellness, and a spiritual home for faith.

The temple houses a Scripture Chanting Group, a Ritual Affairs Group, a Yijing Research Center, a Taoist Item Distribution Office, and a Scripture Chanting Hall. It provides religious services for devotees such as blessing ceremonies, soul liberation, Pure Land home blessings, deity invitations and consecrations, and worship of the God of Wealth, and holds a New Year welcoming ceremony every year.
