Suzhou White Crane Temple

Suzhou White Crane Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

The White Crane Temple is situated on Gaojing Mountain in Fengqiao Subdistrict. According to the records in Volume One of the Huguan Annals, the temple was constructed during the Tang Dynasty, more than a thousand years ago, and was a major temple in the Wu area at the time. Due to historical changes, the original temple no longer exists. To restore this renowned temple and advance tourism in the high-tech district, Master Qiushuang, abbot of Hanshan Temple, spearheaded the effort, with strong cooperation from the High-Tech District Buddhist Association, aiming to revive the temple’s former glory.

Historical records indicate that the original site of the White Crane Temple was on Gaojing Mountain. Located at the center of the high-tech district, Gaojing Mountain boasts beautiful scenery. The Song Dynasty poet Fan Chengda wrote in his poem “Passing Gaojing Mountain at Night”: “Amid grass and dew I tread with ease, / By cool night moon I climb the rugged leas. / Suddenly I hear the stream so clear and bright, / Reflecting the dark, inverted mountain in its light.” The mountain is just over 20 kilometers from downtown Suzhou, enjoying an excellent location and very convenient transportation.

The reconstructed White Crane Temple faces east, toward the upper courtyard Hanshan Temple and Yunyan Temple to the south, with the Lingyan Temple’s Lankatower nearby, and the Jijian Temple and Tongguan Temple to the west. It offers a broad front view with picturesque surrounding mountains and exceptional scenery. After consulting experts, the rebuilt temple largely adopts the architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties, featuring a longitudinal axial layout. It consists of several sections: the front square, the main temple complex, the pagoda courtyard, gardens, and pathways. The temple halls are arranged along the central axis in sequence: the Mountain Gate, the Heavenly King Hall, the Mahavira Hall, the Scripture Depository, and the Pagoda Courtyard. Upon entering the Mountain Gate, there are two-story, double-eave bell and drum towers on either side.
