The garden has a history of more than 220 years and is one of the longest-existing and most completely preserved classical private gardens in Changshu. It was included in the seventh batch of Major National Historical and Cultural Sites in 2013. Restoration of Yanyuan Garden began in 1982, during which key scenic spots such as the Three Graceful Ladies’ Chamber and the Autumn Pavilion were rebuilt according to their original layouts, and the work was completed and opened to the public in the first half of 1984. In June 1998, the second phase of restoration commenced, finishing in October 2000 after three years and an investment of 2 million yuan. This phase restored twelve of the garden’s sixteen scenes, including the Hall of Five Mushrooms, the Poetry Appreciation Pavilion, and the Heavenly Boat Returning from Afar. Starting in March 2007, four more scenes—the Ten Wishes Tower, the Winter Glory Old House, the One Hope Tile Pavilion, and the Bamboo Kitchen—were also restored, reconstructing a total built area of 376 square meters. The architectural style remained faithful to the original, fully showcasing the elegance and refinement of classical gardens in the Jiangnan region. Meanwhile, the garden’s plantings were also revived, bringing back its once exquisite horticultural artistry.

The garden features sixteen scenic spots known as the “Sixteen Scenes of Yanyuan,” namely: the Hall of Five Mushrooms, the Poetry Appreciation Pavilion, the Three Graceful Ladies’ Chamber, the Heavenly Boat Returning from Afar, the Immortal’s Cottage of Early Youth, the Poetic Realm, the Valley of Swallows, the Peak-Guiding Rock, the Cloud-Crossing Bridge, the Green Turning Corridor, the Autumn Pavilion, the Winter Glory Old House, the Bamboo Kitchen, the Dreamy Lotus Nun’s Nunnery, the One Hope Pavilion, and the Ten Floors Tower. Among them, the Valley of Swallows rockery is particularly celebrated. The garden is rich in floral and arboreal scenery, featuring not only ancient magnolia trees, plane trees, pomegranates, and five-needled pines, but also weeping crabapple trees, crape myrtles, podocarpus, and especially a profusion of peonies. As early as the late Qing Dynasty, Yanyuan Garden was renowned for its wide variety of peony cultivars. Thus, rare and precious plants are also a highlight of the garden, complementing its renowned rockeries, clear ponds, pavilions, towers, winding courtyards, and deep corridors to create a uniquely enchanting and boundlessly picturesque landscape.
