Meili Ancient Town

Meili Town is a millennium-old town under the jurisdiction of Changshu City, Jiangsu Province. It lies to the east of Shanghai, south of Suzhou, west of Wuxi, and north of the Yangtze River, a golden waterway, approximately 12 kilometers northeast of the ancient city. According to the "Qinchuan Annals" from the Song Dynasty's Qingyuan era: "In the first year of the Tianbao era during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, Qian Liu, the King of Wuyue, sent generals Mei Shizhong and Li Kaishan to garrison here. Residents gathered around the military presence and formed a market, and the place was named after the surnames of the two generals," hence the name "Meili." It became a town during the Yuanfeng era of the Northern Song Dynasty. Since the Southern Song Dynasty, it has been one of the commercial distribution centers in the inland areas of Changshu, earning the saying "Of the eighteen towns in the eastern countryside, Meili is the foremost," indicating that Meili Town has long been highly regarded and widely renowned in history...

Indeed, this place bears the marks of many historical legends. During the Spring and Autumn Period, the beloved concubine of King Helü of Wu was buried at Yan Zhi Dun; during the Three Kingdoms period, the grandmother of the Wu Kingdom offered incense at the "Chiwu Ancient Temple"; the Tang Dynasty left behind the "Zunsheng Tuoluoni Scripture Pillar"; the Song Dynasty saw the construction of the "Wanggong Ancestral Hall" and the "Lotus Well"; the Ming Dynasty had the "Reading Lane" where scholars passed the imperial examinations; and during the Qing Dynasty’s Shunzhi era, a local resident, Wu Yuanying, transplanted the Nine-Dragon Pine from Qingcheng in Shandong...
