Baoyan Ecological Scenic Park

Nestled in the lush valleys of Baoyan Bay at the southern foot of Yushan Mountain, it is the most richly forested natural ecological park within the Yushan National Forest Park. Covering an area of 109 hectares, it primarily features vast natural mixed coniferous and broadleaf forests (pine, maple, and bamboo groves), with a diverse range of forest vegetation. According to incomplete statistics, there are 309 species across 89 plant families.

The park is also home to 138 species of birds. It includes various forest plant eco-gardens such as a fruit-tea integrated cultivation garden, a premium fruit garden, an ornamental bamboo garden, and a bayberry variety garden, complemented by scenic spots like Fuhai Pool, Baoyan Garden, Jiefu Rock, and Gegge Bridge. Especially attractive is the 10-hectare bayberry grove, where the berries turn red and purple, drawing large numbers of visitors who linger enchanted. The folk custom of “To see bayberries, go to Baoyan,” which has lasted for over 900 years, remains enduringly popular.

Deep within the dense and tranquil forests of Baoyan Bay once stood a fairly large Buddhist temple — Baoyan Temple. Originally named Yanfu Chan Monastery, it was built during the Tianjian era (503–519) of the Liang Dynasty in the Southern Dynasties, boasting a history of nearly 1,500 years. This temple, backed by Yushan Mountain and facing Shanghu Lake, features beautiful and majestic architecture.
