Jiangxiang Jiangnan Rural Folk Museum

The Jiangnan Rural Folk Museum is located in Jiangxiang Village, Zhitang Town, which showcases the charm of Jiangnan rural life. The main building covers an area of over 2,000 square meters, with a total investment of more than 10 million yuan. The museum houses nearly 3,000 types of production and daily-use items and tools once used by rural households in the Jiangnan water towns. It skillfully uses wax figures, animal specimens, folk architecture, and rural customs to recreate vivid scenes of life in the water town countryside.

The museum recreates activities typical of rural life in the water towns, and through modern technologies such as sound, light, and electricity, it presents the local customs, traditions, and cultural flavors of the Jiangnan countryside. These exhibits are the result of 25 years of dedication by Ms. Shen ?Ying, a resident of Zhitang Town. Each item tells a “Changshu old-timer” story, bearing witness to the unique charm of the Jiangnan water towns. They serve as a microcosm of Jiangnan’s farming culture and a “portrait” of traditional rural life.

Among them, the Hundred Buckets and Hundred Baskets exhibition halls are the highlights of the display area. The so-called “Hundred Buckets” refer to various types of buckets used in the production and daily life of rural households in the old days—ranging in size, shape, and design, including square, round, hexagonal, octagonal, and lotus-leaf-edged buckets, all kinds of rare and peculiar forms. The “Hundred Baskets” mainly consist of bamboo products used for everyday purposes, such as incense baskets, treasure baskets, longevity lacquered baskets, imperial tribute baskets, and double-happiness peaked baskets.
