Changshu Yushan School of Seal Carving Art Museum

The Yushan School of Seal Carving Art Museum opened in June 2008. It is China’s first thematic museum dedicated to showcasing the history, style, and representative figures of a single school of seal carving. The newly built Yushan School of Seal Carving Art Museum was originally a residence of the Zhang family during the Qing Dynasty, covering a land area of 470 square meters and a building area of 384 square meters. It is a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit. Renovation work began in March 2008, and interior exhibition arrangements commenced by the end of April.

The museum is divided into two major areas and four sections, introducing the representative figures and works of the Yushan Seal School from the Yuan Dynasty (Miao Zhen) through the early Qing Dynasty, the Qianjia period, the modern era, as well as the efforts made by contemporary Changshu in the inheritance and preservation of seal carving art. The Seal Carving Art Museum integrates exhibitions, collections, research, training, and events. It is another thematic museum in our city that organically combines tangible and intangible cultural heritage, following the Yushan School of Guqin Art Museum. This is China’s first thematic museum dedicated to showcasing the history, style, and representative figures of a single school of seal carving.

The Yushan Seal School originated with Miao Zhen in the Yuan Dynasty. During the late Ming and early Qing periods, seal carvers from Yushan such as Lin Gao, Shen He, and Wang Jin, with their vigorous, simple, and elegant styles, created a distinctive school of seal carving and established the Yushan Seal School. After the late Qing Dynasty, Zhao Shi, a Yushan seal carver who studied under Wu Changshuo, learned from the ancients without being confined by them, becoming an outstanding representative of the Yushan Seal School. The artworks displayed in the museum follow the historical development of the Yushan Seal School, highlighting key figures such as Lin Gao and Zhao Guni. A wealth of historical documents and artifacts vividly showcase the beauty of seal carving within its tiny spaces.

Transportation: Take bus routes 104, 105, 109, 109B, 110, 116, 2, or 5 in Changshu City and get off at the First People’s Hospital, then walk north to reach the site.
