Chengjia Bridge
Chengjia Bridge is a cultural relic protection unit of Suzhou City.
Chengjia Bridge
Located in Dianqiao Village, outside the west gate of the urban area, spanning Shanqiantang. It got its name from the former site of the tomb and memorial shrine of Cheng Zong, a Ming Dynasty Minister of Works, and is commonly known as "Er Tiao Qiao" (Second Bridge). The exact date of its initial construction is unknown, but based on the stone quality of the bridge foundation, it is inferred to date back to the Ming Dynasty. In the 22nd year of the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty (1817), local residents Wu Junji and Zhou Mingxiao, among others, carried out renovations, and further repairs were made during the Xianfeng era. The current bridge is a single-arch structure, built with bluestone and granite, featuring a spandrel-braced arch constructed using the method of vertically aligned, segmented, and parallel courses. It has a rise of 7.2 meters, a top surface length of 2.9 meters, a width of 3.3 meters, a span of 10 meters, and an overall length of approximately 30 meters. A stone inscription is embedded in the bridge pier, erected when Wu Junji and others undertook the renovation during the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty. Each of the two side pillars bears an engraved couplet: “May Heaven always bless good people; may people always do good deeds.” It was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Changshu City in November 1982.
